Frequently Asked Questions

How much does landscape design cost

Many landscaping firms will offer different packages. Some will send out a designer who’ll sketch on site a design for your yard that you can install yourself. Others may waive the design fee in lieu of contracting with their firm for full installation. If you are able to install your own landscape, you will not only save a lot of money, but you will have a personal satisfaction of ownership of your yard, and long term maintenance will not be a burden. A small scale or large scale design. Some people want the full interview, design and install. I only do the design and not quote anyone on install. Landscape designers are better then architects in the sense of design for full scale. They know their plants better and have a stronger background in varied plant designs then the architects do. Design is full scale can cost per hour spent on design and runs from there. A consult is never hard to ask for, however when you get a designer that is booked solid for design you can find a fee.

Typically 10% to 20% of project cost. If you just need consulting, it may work it out in your favor. If design if needed then they need to compute all their time designing a solution for you.

Typically the cost of the design is predicated on experience level and the various levels of certifications, degrees, awards, etc the designer possesses. Next you will define the deliverables. Just a sketch? or an actual blueprint done to scale? Will the architect be involved in the plant selection and installation? Other factors would mostly be based on the complexity and deliverables. For example are you expecting a diagram done to scale? This would require measuring the property. Including a plant materials cost listing, hardscapes listing, is there irrigation needed? All of these require extensive time.

What is landscape design

Landscape design comprises of many projects such as parks, greenhouses, gardens, sports sites, And large estates that include housing developments, business parks, landscape design for small garden.

Landscape design is an independent profession and a design and art tradition. As you sketch out plans for your landscape, the first few of drafts look like blobs on a page as you consider where to put what and the proportion of one space to another. Each blob or bubble represents a space turf, border, bed, pool, patio, tree and so on and may change size and shape as you prioritize your needs and wants. Eventually, the blobs become more defined and merge into one another; a bubble diagram morphs into a concept plan. Determine the shape of larger spaces such as lawns and courtyards first, which sets the tone for the rest of the landscapes bedlines. Using a similar form throughout the design helps create unity and structure within the design.

What are the Landscape Design Elements?

The first step in any design process is to put the ‘Elements’ in place for your Landscaping Space, obviously this changes for every single project because of the size of your space, the level of the ground, the conditions of the site and the soil and what is already there and may need to be worked around.

You, as the landscaper, need to sit and draw a rough plan of your space and place in any fixed feature that you may be required to work around (eg. a manhole cover). I would recommend doing a rough scale map of the area you have available to work in. It does not have to be fancy but a plan that is easy for you to work on and visualise your landscaping ideas.

When you have your basic plan (make sure you make a few copies) you can start to organise the hardscape materials and plants. Hardscape and Plants are referred to as features.

Features are anything that can be physically described by the visual qualities of:

Line – Form – Colour – Texture – visual weight.

How to draw landscape design plans

Get your hands on some good books. As I’m getting into the world of permaculture, this meant finding (sometimes outright purchasing) copies of seminal permaculture works: Permaculture: A Designer’s Manual by Bill Mollison, Edible Forest Gardens by Dave Jacke, etc. Make a disciplined study of some of these up front, and you’ll be amazed how far that knowledge will take you.

3. Start landscape designing! Even if it’s your parents’ back yard, just DO it. (In fact, it may be ideal to begin with your parents’ back yard, or equivalent low-pressure, high-margin-for-error setting). You will make plenty of mistakes, and will have to keep going back to the (literal and figurative) drawing board. This is the process! And it’s exhilarating, frustrating, rewarding, tough – all the things a worthwhile pursuit should be.

4. Keep a notebook. Drawings, sketches, illustrations, notes on plants, notes on lessons learned, photographs, videos: it’s ALL helpful. Much of the design process is the process itself. Make sure you are keeping tabs on what you are doing, learning, questioning, thinking, correcting.

Try to use odd planting numbers when dealing with multiple of same plant. Plants with height typically would be placed on end of house which using only two is fine since far apart . You must know the amounts of sun and shade each area planting in get, then bounce that off local nursery for list suitable plant’s until you get to point of learning them. Also be mindful of possible high wind areas . Your holly trees can’t take high wind due to massive drying out of leaves. At the end of the day if designing for customer they need have a lot input on what plants they find most pleasing to eye. This leaves you with task of working in some, but normally not all of the plants they like into landscape design.

What software do landscape designers use?

For sales presentations, etc. I use VIZTERRA which is a 3D imaging software by Structure Studios. It has great graphics and allows me to ‘walk through’ the project with my customers before installation. Here is an example of a project I am currently working on. You can also use Autocad for actual construction drawings because they are more clear than the plans generated by VIZTERRA.

Sketchup is definitely in the category of best landscape design software and it is free! It is 3D software used by all types of people…homeowners, landscapers, landscape designers, landscape architects, interior designers, architects, etc. Sketchup is an intuitive program with guides to help you along in the beginning. Google 3D Warehouse is where you find many free plants, outdoor amenities such as benches and pergolas, and anything you want to add to the design.

There is a free version and also a Pro version. Start out with the free one as that is the only one that many will need.

Land FX

This program is definitely in my list of best landscape design software and is the one I use now. It becomes an add on to AutoCad or Bricscad (see below), so you must have both software programs. However, they offer a bundled price.

What I found interesting about Land FX is that at this time, it is the only software available that allows you to synchronize your AutoCad planting design with your Google Sketchup design. Make plant changes in AutoCad and with a few clicks, they will be automatically changed in your Sketchup 3D design and vice versa. In Land FX, you can choose the 3D plants in their library to automatically be used in the Sketchup drawing.
